Teacher problems in Hungary: how many are leaving and are there enough left?
Two government politicians said that the number of students per teacher in Hungary is on the decline and is low by international standards. This is true, but a number of other indicators just about confirm the reports of teacher shortages.
Furthermore, the war of numbers has been going on since mid-summer: according to one teachers’ union, thousands of teachers have resigned because of the status law, while the government is talking about a few hundred teachers who have quit, including some who may just be changing schools. In fact, it is precisely the status law that encourages teachers to declare their refusal to accept a new contract only in the second half of September, even if they are already considering it.
