This statistic is about the proportion of Viennese students who do not speak German in everyday life

By 2023, more than a third of Vienna’s population will be foreign nationals and half of its residents will have an immigrant background. This presents various challenges, including for the Austrian education system due to the lack of language skills of children from immigrant backgrounds. It is in this context that a local think tank published a paper showing that 70 percent of primary school children in Vienna do not speak German in everyday situations, such as at home. In some Hungarian articles and social media posts, this was misrepresented as 70% of Viennese children not speaking German at all. Some articles and posts in Hungarian have also suggested that illegal immigration is the reason for this. However, the publication was misinterpreted: it did not say that these children did not speak German at all. The Hungarian articles mistranslated an Austrian newspaper article about the publication. The think-tank confirmed to AFP that the 70 percent figure does indeed refer to children who, by their own admission, do not use German in everyday life.
