How do journalists work? What are the characteristics of quality news? Why should we not avoid news consumption even though there is more and more fake news online? How and what quality news can help you in your daily life – these are some of the topics covered in Detekto’s new training materials.

The Detekto courses aim to prepare students to navigate the online media environment on their own. Recognise when they need to be more alert, aware and to check information, and what tools they can use to factcheck.

In the first three courses, published last autumn, we covered the typical types of fake content, the situations in which we are susceptible to misleading information, and how to recognise, for example, images generated by artificial intelligence. New courses, now published, focus on the characteristics of quality news and the social role of journalism.

Exercises include asking students to correct a poor-quality article or interpret a viral social media post. But they are also asked to evaluate short videos from fictitious school news feeds or video school newspapers to see if they meet the criteria for accurate reliable and fair reporting.

Courses support independent learning, but their content, development areas and objectives can be linked to school education in several ways. To this end, we have also produced a guide for this curriculum pack, which gives teachers specific tips for its use in schools.
